u3a meeting Thursday 17-06-21 2pm #visit to Byland Abbey

Byland Abbey is the perfect place for our first u3a History & Heritage Group visit. We will be able to meet in groups of up to 30 outdoors.

Once one of the greatest monasteries in England, Byland Abbey inspired the design of church buildings throughout the North. A truly outstanding example of early gothic architecture, it inspired the design of the famous York Minster rose window.

We will meet up 2pm outside the Abbey Inn & Tea Rooms. Then explore the layout of the precinct and take a short walk to Wass and the mill pond.

If feeling energetic you might want to follow Frank Johnston-Banks latest scenic walk, Route 23 to Mount Snever Observatory & Oldstead. Otherwise we could finish up at the Tea Room.

Forest of Galtres Society #visit to Thornton Hall Gardens Wed 23 June 2021

Contact Helen Kirk if interested in joining Forest of Galtres Society's visit to Thornton Hall Gardens.

She suggests getting there for 11am, but take your time for arriving and enjoy your visit. "It will be lovely to see our members again, in an outdoor environment, and catch up with you all in small groups!"

The cost is £7.50 per person per carload available, in cash, as you approach the carpark. This is the entry fee which the gardens require and this is shared between two local charities.

The postcode is DL2 2NB.  Routes to get there are all very different. The Gardens, on the Staindrop Road, are only three miles from the centre of Darlington, on the north side of the road.

ps non-members welcome. Let me know who you are!
