Medieval Monastic Buildings: Their Design, Use and Location

This course will equip the student to understand the configuration and use of monastic buildings viewed as ruins in England with an introduction to some of the main surviving remains.

Hopefully at some time in the summer we will be able to go out and visit historic sites. One type of site which is most likely to be open to visitors is the ruined abbey or priory.

In this course we will grow in our knowledge of what these ruins represent - what type of buildings they were and how they were used and lived in.

Using specific examples in England we will explore the history of these building which were so prolific in the landscape in the middle ages, and pinpoint the ones which were near to where we live. Armed with our studies we will then be able to visit and understand these ruins.
