Workhouse Rules and Claypenny Gallop #meeting 20-5-22

Just a few of the facts we learnt from Margot Bains presentation on "Easingwold - Poorhouse to Workhouse to Hospital"

Claypenny Hospital had visiting one afternoon a week. Patients came from all over the area and visitors without cars congregated in Exhibition Square in York to get the Reliant bus. It was standing room only and noisy as everyone caught up with the news since last month. In Easingwold everyone stormed off the bus and moved as fast as they could to the hospital. The elderly and middle aged women were amazing.  Laden with sweets, biscuits and home knitted garments they did
this speed walking. Bottoms stuck out, elbows pumping they stormed
ahead at amazing speed. After visiting, there was another, less laden,
gallop for the bus. The drivers were lovely - happily waiting for the tail
end Charlie's as there wasn't another bus. Late comers were told to
take their time. They were a lovely crowd.
